Changes in the transition to Year 6

 

The transition between Year 5 to Year 6 can be hard for students in the following ways:

 

    • Exam preparation: Year 6 is a critical year with the upcoming Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). The increased heightened focus on performance and preparation can create pressure and anxiety.

      • Curriculum: The curriculum in Year 6 often becomes more challenging, with more complex subjects and higher expectations. This leap in difficulty can be daunting for some students.

        • A sensitive period of socioemotional changes: At 10-11 years old, children are going through significant biologically-driven emotional and social development. Navigating friendships, peer pressure, and the onset of puberty can add to the stress experienced by children.  to the stress.

              Strategies to use in the transition to Year 6

              All these changes can be overwhelming for a child, but there are things you can do to make the upcoming year easier:

               

               

                  1. Regularly talk with your child about their feelings and experiences. This helps them express any anxieties or concerns they might have and reassures them that they have your support.
                 

                    1. Help them create a consistent homework and study schedule. This helps manage their workload and reduces last-minute stress. Ensure there is also ample time for relaxation and hobbies.
                   

                      1. Be a source of encouragement and reassurance. Celebrate their achievements and efforts, no matter how small, to build their confidence.
                     

                        1. Attend parent-teacher meetings, and school events, and be aware of the school curriculum. This helps you stay informed about what your child is learning and any potential challenges they might face.                               1. Teach your child relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness. These can help them manage stress and stay calm when they feel extremely stressed or experience other strong emotions.
                             

                                1. Encourage curiosity and a love of learning by engaging in educational activities that interest them.
